Chapter 1: The condition of sex education.

Sex

In the world HIV epidemic, India is ranked number 3 today According to national crime reports, there is a rape case reported every 15 minutes in India. And in such a situation, the word sex education is missing from the new education policy. India is an amazing country where we protest and get condom ads banned. And we keep thinking why is the population increasing?

Let’s understand what is the condition of sex education in India today and where are the problems.

Sex education has 5 main parts. Anatomy, sexually transmitted diseases, reproduction, contraception, and healthy relationships.

Today, we are taught anatomy in science. We are taught about STDs. But the story ends there. I remember, in our school, PT teachers used to take all the boys together to the conference room. Then they used to give an awkward speech on which all the kids used to laugh. And then even the teachers used to laugh with us. It used to seem funny then but today, we can understand the seriousness.

There is an unsaid rule in schools that sex talk will be handled by parents. Our country has become a sex-fearing country where reproduction, contraception, and relationships are hidden. But has this approach solved any problem?

WHO says that 6% of India’s population has some or the other kind of sexually transmitted infection. An ICMR report says that 43% of India’s men have some kind of sexual problem.  And of them 28% people are hesitant to even go to a doctor. Better die than lose pride. Indians have taken this line somewhat too seriously.

Sexual problems are not just limited to sex. They are also linked to depression and anxiety. That means due to awkwardness, we are seriously impacting our health Due to not talking about relationships, girls have a different type of problem.

Highway (2014 Hindi film) - Wikipedia

You may have seen the movie, Highway. There is an important scene in it. In the climax, Alia Bhatt reveals in front of her family how her uncle molested her in her childhood. God knows how many girls and even boys keep such secrets suppressed for life. All this is happening because of our shame. Our children’s childhoods are ruined And the whole of India should be ashamed of this.

It is important to explain to kids what is good and bad touch in childhood. Bad touch, means, touching the private parts, with a wrong intention that makes you feel uncomfortable.

Chapter 2: Why is there no sex education in the syllabus?

Let me tell you a small story.

It’s an incident dating 100 years back, Raghunath Karve used to teach math and statistics in Maharashtra. He realized that the reason for India’s poverty is the increasing population. People have 8-10 kids and they are unable to educate them. They are unable to provide them good nutrition. And the cycle of poverty continues.

The solution is vasectomy Which is a small surgery. But when he suggested this solution, it created a controversy. People thought that by vasectomy, their private parts will be cut off leaving them impotent. And male ego is so fragile that it broke. This is a story from 1921 and today is 2023.

Vasectomy: Procedure, Benefits, and Risks

Just think, how many men will be ready for vasectomy today? Even after having two kids, men are afraid of vasectomy. Why is the pressure of contraception always on women? Because of misinformation. By the time truth wears its slippers, A lie finishes roaming the world Misconceptions are the biggest enemy of sex education. Today, parents have misconceptions about Sex Education. Let me share some common ones.

Sex Education will show sex positions Porn films will be shown. After Sex Education, kids will get spoilt They probably don’t know their kids are already spoilt Lust will increase due to Sex Education. But actually, in the absence of Sex Education, something else is increasing which is Porn addiction.

If you look at traffic to porn websites India’s is ranked number 2 in the world. At number one is our friendly neighbor, Pakistan. Teenagers’ minds are very curious.

sex

They have a lot of questions. Why are my periods painful? Why did I wet my bed at night? Why are my friends’ breasts growing? How are boys and girls different? If these questions don’t get an answer from parents or school, then get it from an another child. If he is asked, where did you learn from? They share porn Videos link with each other.

It’s a tragedy that kids find internet porn more accessible than their parents. But it is true. Because internet porn doesn’t judge  you. Porn sites won’t call you a bad boy and punish you. Nor will tell someone else. Not having Sex Education is the biggest reason for porn addiction.

Chapter 3: Sex Education works.

What difference does Sex Ed do?

Netherlands and Britain are both European countries. So-called developed countries. The difference between the two is that Netherlands has Sex Ed and Britain doesn’t. Even today, in Britain, the perspective of sex education is that sex is dangerous. Whereas Dutch people normalize it.

As a result, in Netherlands, teenage pregnancies lowered. Whereas, there was no impact in Britain. Because if we tell kids don’t go there, there is danger there, the minds of kids get attracted there.

In the Dutch education system, after teaching the kids a topic, they have to come in front of the class and give a presentation. For example, boys are asked, why do periods happen. If someone gives a wrong answer, they get the correct answer from the students itself. Of course, under the supervision of a qualified teacher, sex is natural and so is talking about it. This is taught in a protected environment like the classroom And the result is seen in their society.

There’s no rift between boys and girls Empathy increases. Boys making girls’ videos go viral trends down. Because girls become their friends. No longer remain sex objects. This is a matter of a developed country.

Now you will say that in big countries such things are possible. But India is still a rural country. Where is such a thing in a country like India? Let me tell you, even in countries like Zambia, Nigeria, Bangladesh, efforts toward Sex Ed are being taken Zambia in 2012, trained 10,000 new teachers. And from 2014, after the 5th standard, they started this education in schools. As a result, HIV infections decreased.

In Nigeria, ‘Education as a Vaccine’, this NGO started Sex Ed e-learning. If people are not comfortable in the classroom, they can get education being faceless.

In Bangladesh, there is an NGO called BALIKA that teaches girls aged 12-19 about gender equality. Along with that, also teaches boys empathy. It provides counseling. By which, the cases of marital rape and domestic abuse decrease. If our African and Asian brothers and sisters can start talking about sex, then why not us?

Chapter 4: Solutions

Self-Taught Reading: When a Child Is a Self-Taught Reader

Usually, parents’ approach to Sex Ed is that the child will learn on his own. Because that’s how parents themselves had learned But the difference is that back then, parents didn’t have a smartphone in hand. The internet was not as accessible as it is today. Where to stop? When to stop? Children won’t be able to learn on their own. Giving the right channel for their curiosity is our responsibility.

Human Anatomy: Explained: The basic anatomy of the human body - Times of India

Number 1:  Become cultured. India’s history has been one of open society. Since the time of Sushrut, we have talked about human anatomy and space since the time of Aryabhata. But thousands of years of invasions and colonization have made us conservative. This conservative attitude is not our culture. Our culture is what teaches us to handle a mature subject sensitively.

First, get convinced that Sex Education is not wrong. From Britain, if we borrow their attitude towards sex, then in future, we will also borrow their problems like teenage pregnancy.

sex

Number 2:  is, don’t be lazy. Sex Education books are available for reading Which teach children every single topic with sensitivity. There is a company called Menstrupedia, which has also featured on Shark Tank. They teach children complex topics through comics. These books are also available in regional languages. What different changes happen in our body? What are periods? How can children keep themselves safe from abusers? They explain such complex topics in an easy language. Parents need to find these books and educate their kids. Here, through stories, you can educate children.

sex

Number 3: Interactive solutions. Young entrepreneurs, if you are listening to this, then Sex Education is a big market, you can capture this market through interactive products and games Through which, children and parents can be made comfortable about sex.

Number 4: Interaction between boys and girls. Most importantly, it is important to educate girls about boys and boys about girls. It is not just about anatomy, it is also about psychology. Usually, after children are 10-12 years old they are taught to be independent. But at the same age, they start having doubts about their body. That’s the right time when we need to guide them. In the end, all I want to say is we believe that our solution-oriented approach would reach some government officer.

We are just saying that there are people in the community who act on solutions. That’s why, talking on solutions really makes a difference. Help us to spread this Article to such people. Tag your favorite actor, leader, entrepreneur or any celebrity who is not afraid to talk on these topics. Share this article with them. Because sex is natural. Our growing population is a proof that we are not ashamed of sex. We just hesitate to take sex education. Come let’s make India 1% better together. Let’s study about sex ourselves and teach everyone else. And sharing this important thing with you makes a difference to me.
